18、, CBDCB Extensive reading Is GM food a good bet? FACED with shrinking farmland and an increasing population, the Chinese government is taking an open attitude toward genetically modified (GM,) food. In November, the Ministry of Agriculture gave safety certificates for the production of two
19、types of GM rice and one type of GM corn in China. The announcement caused great debate on the Internet. In a recent survey conducted by China Daily and , more than 85 percent of respondents were worried about the potential health hazards of GM food. Several forums against GM food even posted m
20、essages requesting signatures from netizens against the commercialization of GM rice, using the slogan “Saving our children”. “If the world has not reached a consensus on GM food safety, it is too proactive and risky to commercialize GM crops on a large scale,” said Zheng Fengtian, vice-dean of
21、 the Rural and Agricultural Development Institute at Renmin University of China. However, supporters of GM crops have argued there is no clear evidence that GM crops pose safety risks to either people or the environment. Wu Yongning, a food safety specialist from the Chinese Center for Dis
22、ease Control and Prevention, said current studies have not proven GM food is harmful to consumers’ health. “I am not ruling out all possible risks, but the risks of GM food are no greater than those of traditional ones, given the heavy use of pesticides in growing traditional food,” he added. A
23、ccording to the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Application (ISAAA), about 224,000 tons of pesticide was saved during the decade between 1996 to 2006, thanks to the expansion of GM planting. Another benefit of GM food is its amazing yields. Huang Dafang, director of the
24、Biotechnology Research Institute at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that using GM technology would help the country achieve the target of increasing grain output by 50 million tons between 2009 and 2020. GM soybeans are already widely consumed in China, as well as in the Unit
25、ed States. Will GM rice be next? While scientists and social activists are taking their sides, Yuan Longping, “father of hybrid rice” and China’s top agricultural scientist, was neutral on GM food. “We shouldn’t dismiss GM food just like that, some GM foods are safe”, said Yuan, “I would like to vol
26、unteer to test GM rice”. Extensive reading A Scientists have found a gene that will allow rice to survive longer in rice paddies that are under water. They hope their discovery will mean the crops will last longer in regions that are regularly flooded. They also hope they will get bumper harvest
27、s. This is good news for the millions of people who suffer from food shortages because of heavy rains. The research is from teams from the University of California and the International Rice Research Institute. Their findings have been published in the science journal Nature. France's government
28、 on Wednesday asked a health watchdog to carry out a probe, possibly leading to EU suspension of a genetically-modified corn, after a study in rats linked the grain to cancer. Another concern is that crop plants engineered for herbicide tolerance and weeds will cross-breed, resulting in the transfer
29、 of the herbicide resistance genes from the crops into the weeds. Genetically-modified foods have the potential to solve many of the world's hunger and malnutrition problems, and to help preserve the environment by increasing yield and reducing reliance upon chemical pesticides. Yet there are man
30、y challenges ahead for governments, especially in the areas of safety testing, regulation, international policy and food labeling. However, we must proceed with caution to avoid causing unintended harm to human health and the environment as a result of our enthusiasm for this powerful technology.

It's our duty to develop science and technology, not to hold it back.” Extensive testing of GM foods

They argued against the claim that GM food is unnatural, viewing it as an extension of evolving scientific and agricultural practices. The potential risks of GM food were recognised but it was claimed that th
35、ese were outweighed by the benefits. Christine, who is very interested in food and believes there is a very strong link between food and health, thinks that GM food is “not right? because it is unnatural and “against the laws of nature?. She thinks that the human body is not suited to GM food and
36、 that eating it could have a direct negative impact on health. The European Union announced plans on Tuesday to temporarily ban the use of animal cloning for food production, while allowing imports of food derived from the offspring of clones from the United States and elsewhere. "Food from cloned animals is safe. In fact, the scientific opinion is that it cannot be differentiated in any way from food from normally bred animals. The issue is animal welfare," EU Health and Consumer Commissioner John Dalli told reporters.
