B Children who spend more time outdoors may have a lower risk of becoming nearsighted, new research suggests. In the study, researchers looked at about 1,900 school children. The scientists found that the kids who had been instructed to spend more time outdoors over three years were 23 percent less likely to develop nearsightedness during this time than those who had not been instructed to spend more time outdoors. Moreover, among the kids who did become nearsighted during the study, the degree to which their eyesight worsened was slightly smaller among those who spent more time outdoors. The researchers selected six schools and required the children, whose average age was 7 at the start of the study, to attend one additional 60-minute class of outdoor activities during each school day for three years. The parents of these children were also encouraged to engage their children in outdoor activities after school, especially during weekends and holidays. The other half of the children, from another six schools, continued their usual activity patterns. After three years, 30.4 percent of the kids in the intervention(干預(yù)) group had become nearsighted, compared with 38.5 percent of the kids in the other group. It is not clear exactly why spending more time outside would benefit children’s eyesight, the researchers said. However, some research has suggested that the higher levels of light intensity found outdoors may increase the release of the chemical dopamine(多巴胺) of the eye. In turn, dopamine is known to restrain the type of growth in the eye that is associated with nearsightedness. Based on the new results, the researchers recommend that children spend more time outdoors because of the potential benefits to their eyesight. However, it’s important to protect kids’ skin and eyes from UV light, which can be damaging. 44.What did the children in the intervention group do during each school day? A. Continue to do their usual activities. B. Attend an extra class of outdoor activities. C. Spend one hour in doing eye exercises. D. Participate in outdoor activities with parents. 45.What can be inferred about the chemical dopamine? A. It is beneficial to eyesight. B. It can damage people’s brain. C. It can contribute to poor sight. D. It means low levels of light intensity. 46. What may be discussed in the following paragraph? A. How to design outdoor activities for kids. B. How to prevent kids becoming nearsighted. C. How to encourage kids to join in outdoor activities. D. How to protect kids’ skin and eyes from UV light. 47. Which can serve as the best title for the passage? A. The More Time Outdoors, the Better B. It’s Time to Engage Kids in Outdoor Activities C. Kids May See Better if They Play Outside D. Researchers Found a Cure for Nearsightedness C Coca-Cola is probably the most famous brand in the world, and in some areasyou can even access it easier than clean drinkable water. Although the company is trying to present itself as a health-conscious company, you can’t really say that drinking cola is healthy for you. Still, we all drink cola, some more and some less, and we tell ourselves that it’s all okay as long as we don’t overdo it. However, Coca-Cola has other functions besides drinking. Cola removes the tarnish(暗銹) from old pennies. Got some old rusty pennies? Not to worry! Put them inside a glass of cola and let them rest for a while. When you get them out, you’ll have shiny pennies that will look as if they were coined a couple of days ago. If you couldn’t clean those pennies with industrial acids, just buy a can of cola and let it do its magic! You can remove gum from your hair with cola. If you’ve got gum stuck in your hair and don’t know a better way to get it out, don’t worry, you won’t have to cut it. Just pour some cola into a bowl and dip the part of your hair with gum on it inside. Leave it for a couple of minutes and then simply wipe off the gum. You can make an exploding fountain. You probably know about this one. You can make an exploding fountain by putting a mint(薄荷糖) inside a two-liter bottle. Then move away from the bottle and get ready for a Coca-Cola explosion. This is a fun thing to do, but it is also a warning — don’t eat a mint and drink cola at the same time, because a similar thing could happen to your stomach. 48. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 imply? A. The expense of Coca-Cola is low. B. Coca-Cola is safe for people to drink. C. Coca-Cola enjoys great popularity. D. Coca-Cola is easier to get than drinkable water. 49. What can cola be used to do? A. Improve people’s hair B. Make pennies shinny C. Dissolve the gum D. Take the place of acids 50. What’s the main idea of the text? A. The major ingredients of Coca-Cola. B. Why Coca-Cola is popular among the young. C. Why we can’t drink Coca-Cola too often. D. Some of the strangest uses of Coca-Cola. Building a healthy family relationship is essential for families of all types. Without a healthy family relationship, it can feel like someone has no one to turn to in times of crisis. Yet family members are there for you whenever you need them. 51 Eat dinner as a family every night. 52 Parents.com states that eating together teaches children proper etiquette (禮節(jié)) and also encourages them to eat healthier foods. Even if you don’t have children, eating together allows you to relax from the busy pace of work and discuss the day. 53 If your husband asks for some time alone, give it to him. Don’t check your teenagers’ things when they aren’t around. Everyone needs some time alone, and respecting privacy is one of the things that build solid relationships. Spend recreational time together. You can play board games together every Friday night, join a family sporting league or read a book together. It can be challenging to make time for families, creating regular family rituals, such as fun events. 54 Spending regular time together is what makes a family a tight unit. 55 To maintain a healthy family relationship, each member must be able to communicate freely with one another, as well as listen effectively. Listening allows you to learn more about your family members’ thoughts and personalities and communicating allows you to express yourself to relieve frustrations and other emotions. A. Eating together as a family is a healthy habit that helps bring all together. B. Never try to interrupt a family member. C. Allow everyone to openly communicate feelings. D. I’d like to say something about the canteen service in our school. In general, the service is satisfactory. The hall is clean and tidy. The dishes look inviting and taste delicious as well. What’s more, the workers there treat us as their friends, which makes us feel very happy. However, we feel the price of the meal is a little too high. Besides, we can only have a limited variety of dishes with little change every week. In addition, we often have to stand in line for a long time before we can get the meal. You could understand how precious time is to us students. Therefore, may I suggest something be done to solve the problems so that we can all enjoy our meals at school? Thanks for your consideration.
