Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive. Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator(獵食動物)gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the "hurt" adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest. Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else. Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They dont make nests. Instead, they get into other birds nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them. Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winners hand and start fighting again. Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps dont hear them, and they dont need to share their food. As children, many of us learn the saying "You cant fool Mother Nature." But maybe you cant trust her, either. 26 . A plover protects its young from a predator by___________. A.getting closer to its young B.driving away the adult predator C.leaving its young in another nest D.pretending to be injured 27 . By "Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky" (paragraph 5), the author means_______. A.chimps are ready to attack others B.chimps are sometimes dishonest C.chimps are jealous of the winners D.chimps can be selfish too 28 . Which of the following is true according to the passage? A.Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others. B.The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winners hand. C.Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nests. D.Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back. 29 . Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? A.Do animals lie? B.Does Mother Nature fool animals? C.How do animals learn to lie? D.How does honesty help animals survive? Cows that are named and treated with a “more personal touch” can increase milk production by up to 500 pints a year. The study, by the university’s School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, involved(包括) 516 farmers across the UK. The study found farmers who named their cows got a 54% higher production than those that did not give their cows names. Dairy farmer Dennis Gibb said he believed treating every cow as an individual(個體) was very important. “They aren’t just our means of making money. They’re part of the family,” he said. “We love our cows here and every one of them has a name. All of us regard them as ‘our ladies’ but we know every one of them and each one has her own personality.” Dr Catherine Douglas said, “What our study shows is what many good, caring farmers have long since believed. Our data suggests that UK dairy farmers regard their cows as intelligent beings(智能動物). They are able to experience a range of emotions(情感的領(lǐng)域).” “Placing more importance on knowing the individual animals and calling them by name can, at no extra cost to the farmer, also increase milk production.” 根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容選擇最佳答案,將其標號填入題前括號內(nèi)。 30 . You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABCs? Do you know there is such a thing as "a banana person"? How strange! ABC means American-born Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a "banana person". A banana is yellow outside. So, when a person is a "banana", he or she is white inside—thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside—looking like a Chinese. Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them dont speak Chinese. But if ABCs cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are overseas(海外的) Chinese. These people may be citizens(公民) of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood(血統(tǒng)). Their parents, grandparents or even great grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair. But they are not Chinese citizens. They are people of the Peoples Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous pop singer Leehom Wang (王力宏). Chinese people love him, especially young people. But he is an American citizen. 35 . "ABCs" in this passage means .
