Ⅰ. He may not have an “S” across his chest but this dog is most certainly a hero. Harley, who was rescued from a puppy mill four years ago,was named the American Humane Association’s 2015 American Hero Dog.Harley, who is missing an eye and has other medical issues from his time at the mill,is now a “spokes-dog” against puppy mills. He serves as the adorable furry face of the “Harley to the Rescue” campaign, which raises funds for the National Mill Dog Rescue, according to a press release. The pup was rescued back in 2011 and adopted by Rudi and her husband,Dan.“It was just four years ago that he was pulled from the cage in the puppy mill and left to die,”Harley’s owner,Rudi, said during the awards show at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles this past weekend, according to Today..“We never would have ever thought he would live this long and make such a difference for so many puppies.” The dog was one of eight finalists up for the American Hero Dog and was chosen as the winner through public votes. The finalists all won $1,500 to be donated to one of American Humane Association’s charity partners, with Harley receiving another $5,000 to go toward his charity partner,New Leash On Life. According to the release,Harley spent 10 years at the puppy mill, and endured rough treatment there, which led to his many medical issues. He lost his eye as a result of his cage being power-washed with him inside. The dog isn’t just the face of his campaign,he also goes on rescue missions and makes public appearances at events and schools to raise awareness for puppy mills. This incredible work is all due to the dog’s fighting spirit. That spirit is allowing him now to be the voice for dogs who cannot speak for themselves and give everybody hope that tomorrow’s going to be a better day. 1.How did the “Harley to the Rescue” campaign function? A.By saving dogs from a puppy mill. B.By operating the American Humane Association. C.By collecting money for the National Mill Dog Rescue. D.It returned to the National Mill Dog Rescue. “How do you account_for your remarkable achievements in life?”Queen Victoria of the UK asked Helen Keller.“How do you explain the fact that even though you were both blind and deaf, you were able to achieve so much?” Ms.Kellers answer is a tribute(致敬)to her kind teacher.“If it had not been for Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown.” According to American speaker Zig Ziglar,Anne Sullivan was no stranger to hardship. She was almost sightless and was,at one time, diagnosed as hopelessly“insane” by her caregivers. She was locked in the basement of a mental institution.Occasionally,Anne would violently attack anyone who came near. Most of the time she generally ignored everyone in her presence. An elderly nurse believed there was hope, however, and she made it her work to show love to the child.Every day she visited Anne, and she left cookies for her and spoke words of love and encouragement. She believed Anne could recover,if only she were shown love. Eventually, doctors noticed the change in the girl.Where they once witnessed anger and hate, they now noted gentleness and love. They moved her upstairs where she continued to improve. Then the day finally came when this seemingly “hopeless”child was released. Anne Sullivan grew into a young woman with a desire to help others as she, herself, was helped by the kind nurse. It was she who saw the great potential in Helen Keller. She loved her, disciplined(管教)her, played with her, pushed her and worked with her until the flickering candle that was her life became a beacon(燈塔)of light to the world.Anne Sullivan worked wonders in Helens life;but it was a loving nurse who first believed in little Anne and lovingly transformed an unmunicative child into a kind teacher. “If it had not been for Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown.”But if it had not been for a kind and dedicated nurse, the name of Anne Sullivan would have remained unknown. 1.What does the underlined part“account for”in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A.show B.prove C.explain D.present 2.What do we know from the third paragraph? A.Anne Sullivan had very normal behavior. B.Anne Sullivan was ignored by everyone. C.Anne Sullivan was kept away from her parents. D.Anne Sullivan was believed to have a mental problem. 3.What would be the best title for the text? A.The Power of Love B.Making a Difference C.A Good Teacher D.Remarkable Achievements 【解題導(dǎo)語】本文主要介紹了一個(gè)有奉獻(xiàn)精神的護(hù)士用自己的愛挽救了海倫凱勒的老師Anne Sullivan,而她又成就了偉大的海倫凱勒的故事。 Anne Sullivan worked wonders in Helens life;but it was a loving nurse who first believed in little Anne and lovingly transformed an unmunicative child into a kind teacher. 分析:本句中it was...who...是強(qiáng)調(diào)句,強(qiáng)調(diào)的部分是“a loving nurse” ,transform...into... 根據(jù)第一段最后一句“‘How do you explain the fact that even though you were both blind and deaf, you were able to achieve so much?’”,并結(jié)合第一句的語境可推知,account for與explain同義,故選C。 根據(jù)第三段第二句和第三句“She was almost sightless and was,at one time, diagnosed as hopelessly‘insane’by her caregivers. She was locked in the basement of a mental institution”,并結(jié)合對(duì)本段的整體理解可推知,當(dāng)時(shí)人們認(rèn)為Anne Sullivan患有精神疾病,故選D。A項(xiàng)表示Anne Sullivan的行為非常正常,這與第三段倒數(shù)第二句“Occasionally, Anne would violently attack anyone who came near”相悖;B項(xiàng)表示Anne Sullivan被大家都忽略了,這與下文中提到的護(hù)士對(duì)她的關(guān)愛不符;C項(xiàng)表示Anne Sullivan遠(yuǎn)離她的父母,文章中并沒有提到,故排除。 Last year,I had a car accident.I was 1 ,and I had my two children in the car. 2 ,they both were OK.Despite having scratches on my left arm and neck,I felt 3 right after the accident.
