Foreign visitors are often puzzled in Japan because most streets there dont have names. In Japan, people use landmarks in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.” In the countryside of the American Midwest, usually there are not many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat (平坦的). In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.” People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map: They measure distance by means of time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “Its about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They dont know. People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because visitors seldom understand the Greek language. Instead of giving you the direction, a Greek will often say, “Follow me.” Then hell lead you through the streets of the city to the post office. Sometimes a person doesnt know the answer to your question. What happens in this situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers, “I dont know.” People in Yucatan think that “I dont know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A visitor can get very, very lost in Yucatan! One thing will help you everywhere — in Japan, in the United States, in Greece, in Mexico, or in any other place. You might not understand a persons words, but maybe you can understand his body language. He or she will usually turn and then point in the correct direction. Go in that direction, and you may find the post office! 1.The passage mainly tells us that ________. A. never carry a map for travel B. there are not many landmarks in the American Midwest C. there are different ways to give directions in different parts of the world D. New Yorkers often say, “I have no idea,” but people in Yucatan, Mexico, never say this 2.The passage says, “In Japan, people use landmarks in their directions.” The word “l(fā)andmarks” means ________. A. building names B. street names C. hotels, marks and bus stops D. buildings or places which are easily recognized 答案與解析 D landmarks是“地標(biāo)”的意思。從文章第一段末句中的“the big hotel”,“a fruit market”,“the bus stop”可知, landmarks不是建筑名、街道名。 3.In which place do people tell distance by means of time? A. Japan. B. American Midwest. C. Los Angeles, California. D. Greece. 4.In the passage, ________ countries are mentioned by the writer. A. seven B. four C. eight D. five B Im a travel addict (旅游迷). I think it is very exciting to go to new places, experience different situations and see unfamiliar things. Heres what I have e up with about why travel is so fascinating. To start with, whether we know it or not, every day is filled with anxiety about things that we dont need to worry about in the first place. Going to new places is an opportunity to escape from our everyday worries. For example, after a whole day at work, I am often physically and mentally tired and start to worry about things. However, the moment I get on the train or bus to my next destination (目的地) I forget all my tiredness and worries. Next is one of the most basic concepts in travel: movement. I always take along books to read on my train trips, but in the end, only about five pages or so ever get read, because I just stare out of the window at the things whooshing by. Just the ability to move is exhilarating Movement also means that we are going to new places and seeing new things. But why is that important? Because experiencing new situations, people and ideas could help us to learn about new things and grow, especially when we dont have the burden of everyday worries. I have never gone on a trip and e back as the same person; I have always changed and grown through travel. So take every type of trip you can, at every chance you get, and you will not only experience more of the world, but will bee a happier person with a richer set of experiences. 5.The text is mainly about ________. A. how to have a fortable life B. how to bee a travel addict C. why travel is so attractive D. how to get rich experiences 答案與解析 C 主旨大意題。通過文章第一段“Heres what I have e up with about why travel is so fascinating.” 6.Traveling to new places offers all of the following benefits EXCEPT that ________. A. it helps us to learn new things B. it makes us happier people C. it helps us to get more experiences D. it gives us more chances to read 答案與解析 D 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)文章第三段“Because experiencing new situations, people and ideas could help us to learn about new things ...”可知,旅行讓人學(xué)到新的東西,故A項(xiàng)錯誤;根據(jù)最后一段“... and you will not only experience more of the world, but will bee a happier person with a richer set of experiences”可知旅行讓人變得更快樂而且會獲得更豐富的經(jīng)歷。 根據(jù)第三段“... but in the end, only about five pages or so ever get read”可知作者在旅行時讀不了多少書,故D項(xiàng)正確。 7.The author develops the text mainly by ________. A. cause and effect B. order in time C. order in space D. examples 答案與解析 A 篇章結(jié)構(gòu)題。 Once, a man got on a bus to New York. Because he did not want to pay, so he hid in the toilet. But a passenger saw her. She tapped the person in front of her on the shoulder and say, “Theres a bum (流浪漢) in toilet. Tell the bus driver.” The message was passing on from person to person. But somewhere along the way, it was changed. The bus driver told that there was a bomb in the toilet. He immediate stopped the bus and telephoned the police. When the police came, they told the passengers to get off the bus or stay far away. Then they closed the highway. As a result, a traffic jam of 15 mile long was soon caused. In the help of a dog, the police searched for two hours. Of course they found no bomb. 答案 Once, a man got on a bus to New York.
