Uint 11 The Media 課時練1 閱讀理解提速練 閱讀理解 A (2018云南高三檢測一)My doorbell rings at 11 a.m. On the step, I find an elderly Chinese lady. She is small and slight. She holds a paper carrier bag in her hands. I know this lady. It is by no means her first visit. Her daughter, Nicole, bought the house next door last October.Nicole, who is currently in Shanghai, has apparently told her mother that I am having heart surgery shortly, and the result is that her mother has decided I need to be supplied with meals. I know what is inside the paper carrier bag—a stainless steel container with a meal of rice, vegetables and either chicken, meat or shrimp. This has bee an almostdaily occurrence. munication between my benefactor(恩人) and me is somewhat handicapped by the fact that she doesn’t speak English and all I can say in Mandarin is “ hello”. Once, she brought an iPad and pointed to the screen, which displayed a message from Nicole telling me that her mother wanted to know if the food was all right. “Your mother just can’t be bringing me meals like this all the time,” I protested. “ I can hardly reciprocate by cooking something from my native land, like roast beef or Yorkshire pudding for her, ”I said. “Oh, no,” Nicole said. “Don’t worry about that. She has to cook for the family anyway, and she wants to do it for you. You can call her Wing, which is her surname.” The tenant in my basement suite is a university student who speaks Mandarin quite well, so with her help, I have found out that Wing is 68—13 years younger than I am. For my part, I was raised in wartime Britain. So here we are, two grandmothers a world away from where we were raised, neither of us able to speak the other’s language. But the doorbell keeps ringing and there is the familiar paper carrier bag, handed smilingly to me by Wing. Right now I am working on some more Mandarin words—it’s the least I can do after such a display of kindness. “Thank you” is, of course, the first one, which somehow seems inadequate. 1. The author and Wing got to know each other________. A.do as well B.offer generously C.give in return D.a(chǎn)ccept with pleasure C 根據(jù)第五段第一句中的“Your mother just can’t be bringing me meals like this all the time”可知作者認(rèn)為老太太一直對自己那么好,而自己只是做一些本國的食物,是幾乎不能回報她的。 C。 3.The author’s effort to learn Mandarin shows her________. A.great satisfaction B.real kindness C.heartfelt thanks D.sincere friendship C 解析:細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段中的“it’s the least I can do after such a display of kindness”可知作者認(rèn)為學(xué)習(xí)中文是為了感謝老太太對自己的好。 In ancient Egypt, the pharaoh(法老) treated the message runner like a prince when he arrived at the palace, if he brought good news. However, if the exhausted runner had the misfortune to bring the pharaoh unhappy news, his head was cut off. Shades of that spirit spread over today’s conversations. Once a friend and I packed up some peanut butter and sandwiches for an outing. As we walked lightheartedly out of the door, picnic basket in hand, a smiling neighbor looked up at the sky and said, “Oh boy, a bad day for a picnic. The weatherman says it’s going to rain.” I wanted to strike him on the face with the peanut butter and sandwiches. Not for his stupid weather report, but for his smile. Several months ago I was racing to catch a bus. As I breathlessly put my handful of cash across the Greyhound counter, the sales agent said with a broad smile, “Oh, that bus left five minutes ago.” Dreams of headcutting! It’s not the news that makes someone angry. It’s the unsympathetic attitude with which it’s delivered(傳遞). Everyone must give bad news from time to time, and big winners do it with the proper attitude. A doctor advising his patient that she needs an operation does it in a caring way. A boss informing an employee he fails to get the job takes on a sympathetic tone. Big winners know, when delivering any bad news, they should share the feeling of the receiver. Unfortunately, many people are not aware of this. When you’re tired from a long flight, has a hotel clerk cheerfully said that your room isn’t ready yet? When you had your heart set on the toasted beef, has your waiter merrily told you that he just served the last piece? It makes you as a traveler or diner want to land your fist right on their unsympathetic faces. Had my neighbor told me of the uping rainstorm with sympathy, I would have appreciated his warning. Had the Greyhound salesclerk sympathetically informed me that my bus had already left, I probably would have said, “Oh,that’s all right. I’ll catch the next one.” Big winners, when they bear bad news, deliver bombs with the emotion the bombarded(被轟炸的) person is sure to have. 4.From “Dreams of headcutting!”(Paragraph 3), we learn that the writer________. As she neared the final stage of the race, she began to feel pain in the stomach. But the determined athlete managed to cross the finish line in 6 hours and 25 minutes. Unbelievably the Chicago race was not even baby June’s first marathon—Miller ran the Wisconsin Marathon earlier this year, four months pregnant. She also ran another marathon when she was about four months pregnant with her son, Caleb. Although there was extra weight, the seasoned runner’s time was just 3 hours off her personal best. Miller began to feel pain near the end of the race, but she was not sure if it was labor(分娩), because she typically feels some pain when she runs while pregnant. After her race her husband drove her to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield where she gave birth to the healthy 7 pounds, 13 ounce baby. Miller decided to run because she and her husband had already signed up for the race. The athletic mother said she experienced an enthusiastic wele from crowds as she ran along. But the devoted runner, who had pleted eight marathons, admitted that she did get a few strange looks along the course. “I know what I can handle. This is something I’ve been doing for a long time,” the experienced marathon runner said. June was born at 10:29 p.m.on Sunday night after seven hours’ labor.“She’s absolutely perfect,” Miller said.“We are extremely happy, but very tired.” After her surprising double achievement, Miller says she is planning to take some time off to concentrate on being a fulltime mom. June。 8.What can we learn from the passage? A jog a day could keep your headaches at bay: regular cardio workouts(有氧鍛煉) may prevent migraines(偏頭痛), a growing body of research suggests. Migraine patients had fewer headaches after doing 40minute cycling workouts three times a week for three months, according to a Swedish study. The exercise routine worked just as well as one of the top migrainepreventing drugs—topamirate—but without side effects of depression and tremors(顫抖). “Cardio workouts can help with regular headaches, too,” says Alexander Mauskop, M.D., director of the New York Headache Center in Manhattan. There are a couple of theories on how it works. “Breaking a sweat may relieve stress,” says Dr.Mauskop.Headaches are often triggered by stress, and if you remove the trigger, you release the pain. The feelgood chemicals produced when you exercise actually block your pain sensors, acting as a natural painkiller. Since headaches can be caused by many different factors like genetics(遺傳), lack of sleep, or certain foods, the cardio workout won’t be the solution for everyone, Dr.Mauskop says. But one German study found that it helped 65 percent of patients, which made it as effective as the best medicines on the market. Dr.Mauskop remends his patients do a halfhour reasonable intensity(強(qiáng)度) cardio workout, like jogging, biking, or swimming three times a week. These workouts are meant to be slow and steady, as opposed to highintensity intervals that alternate between allout runs and rest. Pushing yourself too much or increasing the intensity too quickly can trigger headaches in some people, so make sure your heart rate doesn’t jump above 150 BPM.If you don’t have a heart rate monitor, then breathe only through your nose. You’ll know you’re going too hard if you can’t keep up that breathing pattern. Your migraines could start disappearing in a couple of weeks, Dr.Mauskop says. 12.According to the passage, the author may agree that ________.
