A new study used a puter model to predict how just three grams less a day would affect heart disease in the United States. The result: thirteen percent fewer heart attacks. Eight percent fewer strokes. Four percent fewer deaths. Eleven percent fewer new cases of heart disease. And two hundred forty billion dollars in health care savings. Researchers found it could prevent one hundred thousand heart attacks and ninety-two thousand deaths every year. The study is in the New England Journal of Medicine. Kirsten, at the University of California, was the lead author. She says people would not even notice a difference in taste with three grams, or one-half teaspoon, less salt per day. The team also included researchers at Stanford and Columbia University. Each gram of salt contains four hundred milligrams of sodium, which is how foods may list their salt content. The government says the average American man eats ten grams of salt a day. The American Heart Association advises no more than three grams for healthy people. It says salt in the American diet has increased fifty percent since the nineteen seventies, while blood pressures have also risen. Less salt can mean a lower blood pressure. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is leading an effort called the National Salt Reduction Initiative. The idea is to put pressure on food panies and restaurants. Mayor Bloomberg has already succeeded in other areas, like requiring fast food places in the city to list calorie information. Now a study by the Seattle Childrens Research Institute shows how that idea can influence what parents order for their children. Ninety-nine parents of three to six year olds took part. Half had McDonalds menus clearly showing how many calories were in each food. The other half got menus without the calorie information. 1.How many heart attacks will occur in the US every year? Thats the conclusion of a new study from Finland showing that merely having a television on in the house, even if the kids arent actively watching it,can be enough to disturb their sleep patterns significantly. Childcare specialists are very specific about the amount of hours children of a given age should spend in front of the television and the kinds of shows they should be watching. But few people have looked closely at what happens when a TV is simply on in the background - either being watched by an adult or, just as monly, by no one at all. In a study published in the Journal of Sleep Research, Finnish investigators tried to get at that question, surveying 321 parents of 5-and 6-year-old children to determine the families viewing patterns and the effect this had on the kids sleep habits. All of the families in the study watched a pretty fair amount of TV,with at least one television in the house switched on for an average of 4.2 hrs. per day. On average a child actively watched TV for 1. 4 of those houre and was passively exposed to TV for at least another 1. 4 hrs. In 21 % of the homes, the kids had a TV of their own in the bedroom. All that exposure,it turns out. was doing the kids sleep patterns no favors. In general, hours of passive or active viewing was. the more problems young children had falling asleep. staying asleep, waking up in the morning and avoiding fatigue during the day. But not all TV viewing was equal. Watching TV alone or at bedtime had greater negative impact on sleep. Unusually high passive exposure - 2. 1 hrs. per day or more - was particularly associated with sleep disturbances. especially when they were adult shows to which the kids were exposed. 1.Whats the main purpose of the author to write this passage?
